In this post, you'll learn and practice 15 words and expressions in Brazilian Portuguese related to Christmas.
Let's start with véspera de Natal (Christmas Eve) - that's when most Brazilians actually celebrate Christmas. They'll have the ceia de Natal (Christmas dinner), when they'll most likely eat peru (turkey), as the main dish. Some families might do an amigo secreto (Secret Santa), which literally translates as secret friend, and exchange their presentes (presents).
And if they hadn't sent them by post before they will also hand out their cartões de Natal (Christmas cards) - cartão de Natal, in the singular. The Missa do Galo is the Midnight Mass or Christmas Mass - it literally translates as The Mass of the Rooster. Papai Noel is Father Christmas.
We can't forget the árvore de Natal (Christmas tree), the decorações de Natal (Christmas decorations) and the enfeites de Natal (Christmas ornaments)
One of the Christmas ornaments is the bola de Natal (Christmas bauble) - we sometimes use the diminutive, bolinha de Natal. We also have the guirlanda, (Christmas wreath) and the presépio (nativity scene). Feliz Natal! (Happy Christmas!)
Have a wonderful Christmas!
